Kamyanets-Podilsky, Ukraine |
Postcards of the Past |
Kamyanets-Podilsky lies on the River Smotrych, in the Western Ukraine, near the Romanian and Moldovan borders. It has at various times been part of Poland. In 1941 one of the first and largest mass-murders of Jews took place near the city when an estimated 23,000 were killed. The city has always had a diverse population, hence the varied attractions which include Polish, Armenian and Ukranian Markets and many churches. Its current (2012) population is about 105,000. The postcards on this page were sent to us by our friend in Poland. They have proved difficult to date but we suspect they are from the early 1900s, probably before World War 1 - one of the cards is dated 1903. The images are not as "clean" as we would like, but we hope that you will nevertheless find them enjoyable. |
