Stratford-upon-Avon
Where Is This ? (or Where Was It ?)
Some postcards which we have so far been unable to identify. If you
can help, please email us at
gregoryolney@aol.com. Thanks !! We will
include an appropriate acknowledgement.
Old Postcard, Stratford-upon-Avon, Old Toll Gate
This postcard has not been mailed so I can't date it. Someone has written "Old Toll Gate, Stratford-upon-Avon" on it.
I've had an email from Jayne Tuck who thinks this building is either by the Haselor turn on the Alcester Road or
possibly on the site of a night-club called the Toll House, also on the Alcester Road but in Stratford. Thanks Jayne,
much appreciated !
In October 2006 another email was received, this one from Lucy Freeman who says the Old Toll Gate was on the
Warwick Rd, between Avon Meadows Farm and Oxstalls Farm. It was knocked down about 1991 and replaced with a
small housing development, known collectively as "The Tollgate". Thanks Lucy !

Many thanks to Roy Cane
who wandered round
Stratford, took a lot of
photographs and finally
ascertained by comparing
architectural features that
Masons Court (above) is just
off Sheep Street.
The Fold, Stratford-upon-Avon
Thanks to Pat and Janet Hall for locating "The Fold" (pictured above) on Payton Street.
Lansdowne Hotel, Stratford-upon-Avon
Warwick Road
Davis's Landing Stage, Stratford-upon-Avon
I've never heard of this one - Davis's Landing Stage. Obviously it's on the river, but
where ? Possibly by the Dirty Duck as there are buildings close to the river. The
card looks to date from about 1920. Can you help ? The postcard was published by
F C Rickett of Claverdon.
Rachel Corrigan has emailed us pointing out that this is almost certainly just along
from the "Dirty Duck", by the ferry crossing and that this ties in with the ad for"E
Davis, Pleasure Boat proprietor" which appears on the "
River and Church" page.
I had no idea where this hotel was, but Pat and Janet Hall had a look at the directories held at the Stratford Records Office in the Shakespeare Centre, and found
that the Lansdowne Hotel was at 4 Wood Street, now Debenham's and formerly J C Smith's.

The Lansdowne is first mentioned as being at 4 Wood Street in 1904, prop. A J Mullis, but it is not listed under `hotels`, and the business appears to have been
apartments and a boarding house. By 1912 A J Mullis had moved to 22 Wood Street, but a Mrs Mullis was listed as having a boarding house at 4 Wood Street.

By 1914 there had been a big change and listed in the commercial directory for No. 4 they found Miss Bishop, costumier;  Mr H E Morris;  Albert L Pearce,
confectioner; and Smith and Sons. This last entry has a cross refence to  3 Wood Street which is occupied by a certain J C Smith.  Mrs Mullis is listed in the
residents section of the same directory as still having a boarding house at that same address, which is either an error, or the building is getting rather crowded!

If you go to our
"Events" page, you will see a postcard of the Mop in Wood Street - the Lansdowne can just be seen on the left - click on the image to enlarge it and
look at the black flag.
A bit of an odd one - this postcard was mailed from Selly Oak to New Jersey, USA
in 1935. The writer has written "Stratford - Warwick Road" at the top of the card -
is it an address or is it a description of the postcard ? It could well be up the
Warwick Road somewhere, but an odd scene to photograph for a postcard.
