Postcards of the Past
Shottery
Shottery is now just about joined on to Stratford, although when I was a
kid it was a separate village. It is of course chiefly known for Anne
Hathaway's cottage, but it is a pretty little place with some lovely old
cottages.
Old Postcard, Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Shottery
Shottery, Tavern Lane
This postcard was mailed in 1969, although I suspect the view is much earlier.
Anne Hathaway's Cottage
An interesting postcard from 1908, mailed in Norwich to the Norwich Co-op ordering a quarter ton of the best house coal to be delivered before 8pm on Friday !
Old Postcard, Shottery
"Ann Hathaway's Cottage is situated at Shottery, about one mile west of
Stratford. Here in this picturesque half-timbered building, with a thatched roof,
was born Ann Hathaway, who in 1582 was married to Shakespeare. They had
three childre. Ann survived her husband about seven years, and was buried
beside him in Holy Trinity Church."
A nice old view of "A Quaint Corner in Shottery" - a real photo postcard from the
1930s at a guess.
A postcard by "Jotter".
A postcard mailed in August 1943.
A postcard from September 1907, posted from Stratford to Blackpool.
Tapestry Tea Rooms, Shottery
Shottery Manor
"The Tapestry Tea and Guest House" - can anyone help with a date ?
Shottery Manor - a postcard from 1943.
No date for this postcard, but it is interesting that there is no indication that it is Anne Hathaway's. Perhaps the tourist
industry was not so well developed at the time.

Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway
(1556-1623) in 1582. She is assumed to have
grown up in the Hathaway family home, now
known as "Anne Hathaway's Cottage".
