Shipston-on-Stour,
Warwickshire
Shipston-on-Stour is a small Warwickshire market town about 8 miles south of
Stratford-upon-Avon. The name "Shipston" was originally "Sheep-wash-town" and as is
implied by the name, the town was an important sheep-market town for many years. In
1836 a branch line from the horse-powered tramway, built a few years before to link
Stratford with Moreton-in-Marsh, was opened and enabled the town to continue to
flourish as the demand for wool waned. Shipston was also an important coaching town.
This card of Sheep Street was mailed in 1941.
Almost the same view of Church Street - from the car, about 1950.
A view of Shipston which is dated 1965.
The Bridge, probably about 1950.
An undated postcard of the Red Lion and the Stour Garage. Note the "Flowers Ale" sign on the "Red Lion" - Flowers Ale
was brewed at the brewery on the Birmingham Road in Stratford-upon-Avon until the early 1960s.
This postcard was mailed in 1954, but the photograph from which it was taken
appears to be earlier, possibly pre-war.
Two postcards of the Old Mill Hotel - both undated.
