| With a population (2010) approaching 200,000, Salt Lake City is the most populous settlement in the US State of Utah, and is the state capital. The city was founded in 1847 as Great Salt Lake City by a group of Mormon pioneers led by their prophet, Brigham Young. It lies in the northeast corner of the Salt Lake Valley surrounded by the Great Salt Lake to the northwest and the steep Wasatch and Oquirrh mountain ranges on the eastern and western borders. |
