Things to do in Rome May we suggest the following little excursions to enhance your visit to Rome ? 1 Visit St Peter's and the Vatican. If you belong to the Catholic religion you will not need me to tell you of the importance of the Vatican in religious affairs. But regardless of your beliefs, or lack of them, make time to visit St Peter's during your visit to Rome. St Peter's Square is very imposing with the great cathedral dominating the scene and crowds of people queueing to go inside. The interior is very impressive, although personally I find it a bit over the top. The Vatican Museum is well worth the long wait, and the line does move quite quickly. There is a remarkable collection of religious art, and the visit includes the Sistine Chapel. There is also a pretty good restaurant - and toilets ! Allow several hours for your visit. Follow this link for more information, opening times etc.

3 Fontana di Trevi. Another very popular tourist spot but nevertheless something not to be missed. This extraordinary baroque fountain was completed in 1762, and a legend grew up, perpetuated by the film "Thre Coins in a Fountain", that those who throw a coin into the waters of the fountain will return to Rome. It is estimated that, currently, about 3000 euros are thrown in each day, giving municipal staff the task of emptying it regularly. The money has been used to fund a supermarket for Rome's poor.

4 Piazza Navona. A large, rectangular piazza with lots of restaurants and three fountains, the centre one being Bernini's famous Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi. The piazza was constructed on the site of the Stadium of Domitian where games were held in Roman times. The church of Sant'Agnese in Agone is also in the piazza. This is a very pleasant place to stop for a drink whilst walking round Rome, and it's only a very short stroll from the Pantheon.

2 The Colosseum. This is an absolute must for visitors to Rome. It's easy to get to - depending where you are staying, take a taxi, bus or use the Metropolitana. You won't fail to be impressed by the sheer size of the place, and the fact that it's still standing after 2,000 years. There will be loads of visitors in the summer, but don't let this put you off. Nearby is the Arch of Constantine, another remarkable legacy of the Roman Empire, and the Forum. So lots to do and see in this area.
