| Rome and the Vatican |
| Rome is the capital of Italy and also its largest city. It has a long and fascinating history, spanning over 2,500 years and going back to the days when it was the centre of the Roman Empire. It lies on the west coast of Italy, on the River Tiber and in the Lazio region of the country. Rome is also home to Vatican City, an independent state within Rome headed by the Bishop of Rome (the Pope). |
