Postcards of the Past
I've been to Pompei twice, once in 1970 on an organised tour and
a second time in 1990 when we went on the train from Sorrento
and walked round on our own - the latter was a much better
experience !  Pompei is fascinating with Vesuvius looming in the
background, and it takes no great effort to imagine the huge
clouds of smoke and ash which enveloped the town in 79AD.
When we visited, the site appeared somewhat dilapidated - I hope
things have improved since.

Pompeii - one "i" or two ? As far as I can
ascertain - and you can see from the
postcards - the Italian spelling is with one "i",
whilst the anglicized version has two. Any
other ideas ?
