The Queen's College was founded in 1341 by Robert de Eglesfield, (Eglesfield is a village in Cumberland) chaplain to Queen
Philippa, wife of King Edward II. Whilst open to all, preference was to be given to students from Cumberland and Westmorland,
and for a while this preference became a monopoly, although of course today this monopoly no longer exists.
The College Name should always be used with the definite article
- although postcard manufacturers seem not to have known this !
Also "Queen's" is singular, unlike
Queens' College Cambridge
which is plural, and does not have the definite article.
This view of the college appears to date from around 1912.

In 1343 Queen Philippa gave the college some land in Southampton
which was later developed as part of Southampton Docks and thus
secured the college's financial position in the nineteenth and
twentieth centuries.
The Queen's College Library is one of the best collections in Oxford
and in addition contains a large number of rare books.
Notable former students include Rowan Atkinson, actor; Joseph
Addison, co-founder of the "Spectator"; Edmund Halley, astronomer;
Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web.
