Merton College was founded by Walter de Merton in the mid 13th Century. Building was rapid for those times with the majority of the college buildings and the chapel being completed before the end of that century. As one might expect, there have been many alterations since.
In the Civil War (1641-51) Merton was the only Oxford college to side with the Parliamentarians. When the Royalists occupied Oxford, the college moved to London for several years and its buildings were commandeered by the King's men. Differences were soon settled after the conflict and normal college life resumed.
Merton admitted its first female students in 1980.
