Lady Margaret Hall was the first women's college in Oxford, and was founded in 1878 by Edward Talbot. The college's first principal was Elizabeth Wordsworth, a great-niece of the poet William Wordsworth. The college was named for Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII. In 1979, as with most of the other women's colleges, men as well as women were admitted.
Well-known former alumni include Amanda Foreman, biographer : Nigella Lawson, celebrity chef : Lady Antonia Fraser, biographer : Benazir Bhutto : Ann Widdecombe.
There is a thriving College Newspaper, "The Loo News" which, as you might expect, takes the piss "quite heartily" !
