Lady Margaret Hall was the first women's college in Oxford, and was
founded in 1878 by Edward Talbot. The college's first principal was Elizabeth
Wordsworth, a great-niece of the poet William Wordsworth. The college was
named for Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII.
 In 1979, as
with most of the other women's colleges, men as well as women were
admitted.
