Keble was established in 1870, originally for men only, the fellows of the college being mostly bachelors and
resident in the college. Women were admitted in 1979. Initially the college placed a great emphasis on
theological teaching, but this has long since ceased. Today Keble is one of the larger of the Oxford Colleges
with over 400 undergraduates. For more about the college,
visit their website.
On its construction, Keble was not widely admired within the
University, particularly by the undergraduate population of nearby St
John's College (from which Keble had purchased their land). A
secret society was founded, entrance to which depended upon
removing one brick from the College and presenting it to the
society's elders. Some accounts specify that one of the commonest
red bricks was necessary for ordinary membership, a rarer white
brick for higher-level membership, and one of the rarest blue bricks
for chairmanship. The hope was that eventually Keble would be
completely demolished. As a result, there remains a healthy rivalry
between St John's and Keble to this day.
The above is from the Wikipedia article about Keble.
Notable members of Keble include:
Ed Balls, New Labour politician
Giles Coren, writer
Charles Hazlewood, conductor and broadcaster
Imran Khan, politician, cricketer
Peter Pears, singer
and of course many more. Is there someone we
should add ?
