Originally founded by Cardinal Wolsey in 1524 as Cardinal's College and refounded by Henry VIII in 1546,
Christ Church is one of the largest colleges in the University of Oxford
The famous bell tower was designed by Sir Christopher
Wren, a former student at Christ Church, in 1682. The
tower houses the bell, Great Tom, and like Big Ben in
London, the tower tends to be called after the bell.
The Dean who supervised the construction of Tom
Tower, John Fell, was an unpopular man who inspired
the famous verse,
'I do not love thee Doctor Fell,
Why I don't I cannot tell,
But this I know and know full well,
I do not love thee Doctor Fell.'

Christ Church Cathedral is the Chapel
for the College as well as the cathedral
church for the Diocese of Oxford.
The College's Latin name, Aedes Christi,
means Temple or House of Christ, and thus
the College is known as The House.
Christchurch in the South Island of
New Zealand was named after the
college in 1848.
The College has appeared in many literary works,
including Evelyn Waugh's "Brideshead Revisited" and
Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland".
Former students at Christ Church include thirteen British Prime
Ministers (only two short of the total number produced by the
whole of Cambridge !). The most recent are Anthony Eden and
Alec Douglas-Home.
