the fire.
The Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon caught fire on 6th March
1926. In spite of efforts from fire-brigades from all over the county, the theatre was
reduced to a roofless shell, although the picture gallery and library were saved.
Most of these postcards of the blaze - which are by no means a rarity - have been in
my family for many years. Many Stratford people bought and kept sets as souvenirs.
My mother was a girl of 20 - she cycled from Snitterfield to join the throngs of
on-lookers - and later bought her own set which is reproduced on this website. The
fire was a major event for Stratford's inhabitants - there may well still be some alive
who remember it, and many will, like me, have heard accounts from relatives and
friends.
If you have any memories of the fire - or perhaps have an aged relative who can recall
the event - please
get in touch ! We'd love to publish your impressions !
