Old Theatre Ruins, Stratford-upon-Avon
Two quite well-known postcards of the aftermath of the fire. On the left, a policeman surveys the ruins (does anyone know who he
(
Z)              is/was ?), whilst on the right Lady Macbeth's statue was conveniently situated for a dramatic effect !           (Z)
It's a little difficult to make out the detail in this postcard, but it appears to have been taken outside the "Dirty
Duck" some time after the blaze - the gardens are well fenced off, the tress are in leaf and there is no sign of
the tower. Was the tower demolished soon after ?

Another postcard by Antona. Note the tower - the top has disappeared. Compare this card to that on the right.

The Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon caught fire on 6th March 1926. In spite of efforts
from fire-brigades from all over the county, the theatre was reduced to a roofless shell, although the picture
gallery and library were saved.
Most of these postcards of the blaze - which are by no means a rarity - have been in my family for many years.
Many Stratford people bought and kept sets as souvenirs. My mother was a girl of 20 - she cycled from
Snitterfield to join the throngs of on-lookers - and later bought her own set which is reproduced on this website.
The fire was a major event for Stratford's inhabitants - there may well still be some alive who remember it, and
many will, like me, have heard accounts from relatives and friends.
If you have any memories of the fire - or perhaps have an aged relative who can recall the event - please get in
touch ! We'd love to add your impressions and memories to this page !
If you would like to help financially with expanding and
maintaining this website, we would appreciate your
contribution, however small. We hate to have to ask, but times
are hard ! Thanks !
