Bergen, Norway
In 1953 I was one of a group of boys from King Edward VI Grammar School, Stratford-upon-Avon, who went on a walking tour of part of Norway. We sailed from Newcastle to Bergen on the SS Venus and spent two weeks in the mountains, glaciers and fjords. The postcards on this page are of some of the places we visited.
We stayed at a Youth Hostel outside Bergen - we had to go up a funicular railway to reach it.
A 1927 postcard of the Dockside at Bergen.
Voss - about half a dozen of us walked 30 miles from Gudvangen to get here one day - to save the bus fare !!
Gudvangen - we walked from here to Voss, and some hardy souls swam in the fjord.
A lovely old postcard of Bergen fish market.
What looks like a group of visitors to Gudvangen.
Gudvangen - a lovely old postcard showing lots of horses and carts waiting to pick up visitors who are being rowed ashore from a steam ship moored in the fjord.
Two more postcards of Gudvangen, both of which show the Viking Hotel.
postcards of the past
This view of Bergen was posted in 1937.
Gudvangen again - no date.
Another postcard of Bergen Fish Market.
An undated view of Voss.
A Bergen Theatre.
Finse - we stayed here a couple of nights. There is a glacier (or was, it's probably melting now !) on which Captain Scott is supposed to have "rehearsed" before going to the South Pole. We wandered on to it and nearly got ourselves killed !!
Not much information about this one - it seems to be a bandstand in a Bergen park.
