| Moscow |
| Moscow is the capital of Russia and also its largest city. Formerly the capital of the Soviet Union, it lies on the Moscow River. I visited Moscow in November 1986 for a few days, and thoroughly enjoyed it - except for the food and the cockroaches ! We stayed on Gorky Street at the Intourist Hotel , now thankfully knocked down. We had some fun teasing the Intourist Guide, who had little sense of humour, and managed to "escape" from the "official" tour and explore Moscow for ourselves. We found the people delightful when they knew they weren't being scrutinised by a person or persons unknown ! There was a bug in our hotel room, in the table lamp - it fell apart and there was a tiny microphone ! So we said lots of nice things about the Soviet regime ! The Metro is fabulous and easy to use. No doubt there have been many changes in 20 years - not all for the best ! |
