Postcards of the Past
The City of London
The City of London - the "Square Mile" - is not one of the 32 London boroughs, being an independent City
within London. It is governed by the City of London Corporation, and includes St Paul's Cathedral, but
not the Tower of London which is in the neighbouring borough of Tower Hamlets. The City is the centre of
the UK Financial Services Industry, and is the area around which Greater London grew, thus containing
many historical buildings and sites, including  the Monument to the Great Fire of London, St Paul's
Cathedral, the Guildhall, the Royal Exchange, Dr. Johnson's House and the Mansion House. The City has
a resident population of about 10,000, although over 300,000 people work there.

"Mansion House & Cheapside. Chepe of the Middle Ages, and one of the most ancient and historic streets in
London, extends from St Paul's to the Mansion House, and has always been a street of traders. John Gilpin,
of ballad fame, was a "linendraper bold" of Cheapside. Here stood one of the Eleanor Crosses, which the
Puritans pulled down in 1643. The Mansion House is the official residence of the Lord Mayor of London."
