Lille - Rue de Trevise
Did You Know.......that during the German
occupation of World War 1 there was a munitions
depot called the Arsenal des dix-huit Ponts, located
on the outskirts of the city on the Boulevard de
Belfort ? On the night of 11 January 1916, at about
3am, an enormous explosion destroyed the depot,
leaving a crater 30m deep and 150m in diameter.
The Moulins district surrounding the depot was
almost wiped out, with nearly 750 houses being
totally destroyed. The official death toll was 104,
with many more injured. The cause of the explosion
has never been determined.
