| kiel, Schleswig-Holstein |
| Kiel, in northern Germany, is the capital of Schleswig-Holstein. Located on the Baltic at the head of the Kieler Förde, the city has been one of the country's main naval bases since the 1860s. During my National Service with the Royal Navy I was stationed there - actually at Holtenau - for a few weeks in 1957. I recall crossing the Bay to Laboe which had a great beach and also a Memorial to German Submariners. |
