| The Isle of Wight is the largest island of England, and lies between two and four miles off the south coast of Hampshire. It is known for its sailing and for its seaside resorts which have been popular since Victorian times - Queen Victoria had a home, Osborne House, on the island. Formerly part of Hampshire, it is now a county in its own right. Access to the island is by hovercraft from Southsea, and by ferry services from Southampton, Portsmouth and Lymington. |

| Although the lady appears to be chatting on her mobile phone, this postcard of Alum Bay actually dates from the 1920s. |
