High Street is the busy shopping centre of Stratford-upon-Avon with many of the usual
chain retailers but also a smattering of independent shops as well - and there are pubs
and restaurants for most tastes either in High Street or close by.

I used to love this street as a child - my Great-Aunt Daise (Daisy Jackson, who lived at 17
Broad Street) worked in Lennards Shoe shop for many years. There was Ballance's, the
grocers.  And W H Smith's - spent hours in there looking for books. And the Midland
Educational.
Do You Remember:-

The Town Hall Fire. One morning in 1946 we heard on the wireless that the Town
Hall was on fire, so on the way to school we went and had a look. By this time the fire was
out, no doubt much to our disappointment (I was only 9 !) I recall that a valuable
Gainsborough painting was destroyed in the blaze, which ruined the ballroom.

The Town Hall Ballroom Floor Collapse. My mother once told me she was at a
dance there when the floor  collapsed ! Does anyone have any information about this ?

Gordon Kinman's Fishmongers shop on the corner of Sheep Street and High Street,
opposite the Town Hall. Gordon was a friend of my father but I don't know much about
him - any information will be most welcome. The shop is no longer there, having been
destroyed when the corner of High Street and Sheep Street was widened.

Sleath's. This was a bicycle shop which also sold toys, and was like a magic cave to me as
a child. It was a long, thin shop and you had to walk deep inside to find the toys.

The Old Tudor House Restaurant (now a pizza place) on the corner of Ely Street.
My mother used to take me there to tea - and they had Kunzle's Cakes !

J C Smith's - now Debenham's. This was a rambling old department store which ran
through to Wood Street (it still does). It had well worn wooden floors and I had to go
there with my mother to get my school clothes for KES.
