About 8 miles north-west of Reading are two villages which straddle the Thames and the boundary between two counties. Goring, the larger of the two, is in Oxfordshire whilst across the bridge is Streatley in Berkshire. An old friend lives in Goring and I have been a regular visitor for nearly 40 years. There are some excellent pubs in the area, including "The Miller of Mansfield" in Goring and the "Swan" in Streatley, but many Thames-side pubs in the area have, in my opinion, been spoiled by turning themselves into pretentious restaurants, ruining their atmosphere and serving horrible lager instead of a decent pint - but perhaps this is not the place to moan about that !!
Did You Know....that the "Swan" at Streatley was once owned by Danny LaRue ?...........that George Michael has a house in Goring ?......that Spice girl Geri Halliwell used to live in Goring ?
The Goring Gap News is a local magazine with an interesting website..
