Dortmund is the eighth largest city in Germany with a population (2010) of about 580,000. The
city lies just to the north of the River Ruhr and is linked to the North Sea by the Dortmund-Ems
Canal, which terminates in Dortmund port. Dortmund is part of the Ruhr area and is in the
Bundesland of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The city, an important industrial iron and steel centre, was
heavily bombed during World War 2
