| Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand, situated about one third of the way down the island's east coast. The city was named after Christ Church college in Oxford, whilst the River Avon, which flows through the centre of the city, was named after the Scottish Avon in Ayrshire. In the past, major Antarctic expeditions, including both Scott's and Shackleton's, have used Christchurch as their starting point. |
