Charleston is the oldest and - after Columbia - the second largest city in the US State of South Carolina, with a population (2008) of about 112,000. The city lies just south of the mid-point of South Carolina's coastline, at the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper rivers. Its name is derived from Charles Towne, after King Charles II of England.

This postcard of King Street, Charleston, was mailed in 1912.

Apologies if you are offended by the unacceptable description on this old postcard. This was the name given - by white people of course - to the black neighbourhood of the city.
