The College was founded as Gonville Hall by Edmund Gonville, Rector of Terrington St Clement in Norfolk, in 1348, and is now the fourth-oldest surviving college of Cambridge University.
With very little money, Gonville soon fell into a state of disrepair, but in 1557 it was refounded by Royal Charter as Gonville and Caius College by the physician John Caius.
Although he rescued the College, Caius had some unusual rules, insisting that the college admit no scholar who “is deformed, dumb, blind, lame, maimed, mutilated, a Welshman, or suffering from any grave or contagious illness, or an invalid, that is sick in a serious measure”
In contrast to its initial lack of funds, Gonville and Caius is today one of the more wealthy colleges with an estimated financial endowment of over £100m and assets approaching £150m.
Follow this link for the College website.
The college is today usually referred to as just "Caius" (which is pronounced "keys"). It is situated right in the centre of Cambridge with some beautiful old buildings and extensive gardens.
Notable alumni - or Old Caians - include: Harold Abrahams Alastair Campbell Jimmy Carr Kenneth Clarke Orlando Figes David Frost Iain Macleod Titus Oates
There is a stained-glass window in the dining hall which depicts the double-helix of DNA and which commemorates Francis Crick, a former fellow of the college.
