Newnham College
Old Postcard, Cambridge, Newnham Gate
Newnham was established by Henry Sidgwick in 1871 as a place where
young women could reside whilst attending lectures in Cambridge. The first
building - the Old Hall - was built on Sidgwick Avenue in 1875, with three
more buildings appearing by 1910.
Appallingly, but not surprisingly, it was 1948 before Newnham students were
allowed to receive a full Cambridge degree. Before this they had to settle for
the title but not the substance of their degree and held the much joked about
"BA Tit".
Today Newnham remains as a women only college with c 400
undergraduates, 150 postgraduates and about 70 academic staff.
