When we first started this website, some visitors asked us if we could recommend books about Stratford and the area. So we included a few. Now we have decided to extend the coverage to a few other places, so if you like a good read, watch this page !! Please note that this is an entirely personal selection - just because we don't include a book here doesn't mean we don't like it, it's just that we haven't read it or don't know of it ! Several of our recommendations are older publications and may not now be in the shops. However, if you would like to buy any of the books, Amazon or many other online book companies will be happy to try to find them for you. You may also use the Google search box on this page to try to locate a book.

As the title suggests, this is a collection of old photographs of Stratford from Victorian times. The photos are from the collection of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and mostly pre-date those on our website. An excellent book with some great old images.

One of my favourite books about Stratford. These are the memories of George Hewins, recorded when he was approaching his 100th birthday. This book gives the reader a real impression of what life was like for the poor in one of England's most picturesque and visited towns. Both funny and sad, and well worth reading if you can get hold of a copy.

A collection of stories about Stratford, including the 1954 murder in the churchyard (I remember the detective, Capstick, visiting the Masons Arms at Wilmcote and as far as I know they never found out who did it). There are stories about the Mop, Marie Corelli, the Old Theatre Fire and others. A good read.

You may have a problem getting hold of a copy of this book - I can't find it on Amazon so it would probably be best to get in touch with the Moreton Local History Society- you can find them on Google. The book is a collection of stories and articles about Moreton-in-Marsh and some of the surrounding villages. There are several illustrations, including one of Violet Webb who competed in the womens' 80 metre hurdles at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1932. Well worth trying to find a copy !
