Mumbai, India

The city of Mumbai (formerly Bombay) lies on India's west coast around a deep, natural harbour. The city itself, the capital of the state of Maharashtra, is the most heavily populated in the world, with around 14 million inhabitants. As well as being India's main commercial centre, Mumbai is the home of the "Bollywood" film industry.

"Pydownie Street, Bombay (City). Pydownie Street, one of the principal highways of Bombay, is typical of the many animated thoroughfares of this busy city. Forty per cent of the trade of India is now done through Bombay, while its chief industries are dyeing, tanning, and working in metal. It possesses no less than seventy large steam mills, and a population of between eight and nine hundred thousand."

"These beautifully laid out gardens are a source of pleasure to the weary and jaded worker in the cool of the evening after a hard day's work in the burning sun and stuffy offices.
