Banbury, Oxfordshire
Banbury is a town in North Oxfordshire in England. It is set in the middle of rich agricultural land for which it
provides commercial and retail support and facilities. The town also contains the world's largest
coffee-processing factory.
Did You Know......that the English nursery rhyme "Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross" refers to the
cross destroyed by Puritans in 1602 ?  During the Reformation Banbury had three crosses, viz the High
Cross, or Market Cross, which was situated in Cornhill : the Bread Cross, at the corner of High Street and
Butchers Row : and the White Cross at what is now the corner of West Bar Street and Beargarden Road.

Did You Know.........that Banbury Cross was
built in 1859 to commemorate the marriage of
Queen Victoria's eldest daughter to Prince
Frederick of Prussia ? The current Cross is a stone,
spire-shaped monument decorated in Gothic form.
Statues of Queen Victoria, Edward VII and George
V were added in 1911, and can just be seen in the
postcards above and below.

Globe Room, Reindeer Inn, Banbury
The Globe Room at the Reindeer Inn.
Did You Also Know.......that the Globe Room at the Reindeer Inn in
Banbury has a fascinating history. The Inn dates from the early 17th
century, and the Globe Room is said to have been used by Oliver
Cromwell to try Royalists and also to plan the Battle of
Edgehill in
1642. In 1912 the "Banbury Guardian" claimed that the Globe Room
had disappeared and had been seen in the United States, and a
question was asked in Parliament. It seems that a sale had been
agreed and that removal had begun, but this was stopped. Reports
are then a little confusing but apparently the room was taken to
London and stored for many years before being returned to the
Reindeer in 1984. No doubt someone will be able to fill in the gaps
for us !
