Archangelsk (formerly Archangel in English) lies on the River
Dvina near where it flows into the White Sea in the far north of
Russia.  It was the chief seaport of medieval Russia and is
located at the end of the 1,133 km railway which connects it to
Moscow via Vologda and Yaroslavl.
