| Archangelsk (formerly Archangel in English) lies on the River Dvina near where it flows into the White Sea in the far north of Russia. It was the chief seaport of medieval Russia and is located at the end of the 1,133 km railway which connects it to Moscow via Vologda and Yaroslavl. |
